Continuing our effort to see all the sights of Oslo, we ventured out in the rainy 39 degree (F) weather to go see the Polar Ship Fram. I guess it was fitting as it felt freezing to the Texans to go see a ship that has ventured to the Arctic and Antarctic. It was a good thing we went on a cold day as well because we were wearing warm clothes and they keep it rather cold in the building to simulate the expeditions.
This ship was constructed in 1892. The Fram polar vessel was used by Fridtjof Nansen on the first Fram Voyage across the ice surrounding the North Pole. Later on, Fram was used by Roald Amundsen to reach Antarctica on his successful expedition to reach the South Pole in 1911.
She is the strongest wooden ship ever built and still holds the records for sailing farthest north and farthest south. There were actually very interesting exhibits about the expeditions and polar expeditions in general.
We were able to climb on most parts of the ship and see how the people would have lived as they were on this boat for 3-5 years. It looked like a pretty miserable experience to me.
Katherine's favorite part was where they had stuffed polar animals on exhibit. She was able to see penguins, polar bears, husky dogs, seals, musk ox, reindeer and a lot of other birds.
