Time at Nana and Pops

After church this week Katherine went to Nana and Pops' house so Sam and I could help out in the church library. They are getting new carpet this week and every book had to be moved. Katherine had been a pill all morning but still wanted to go to Nana's. She had a great time. They watered Nana's flowers.
They made tents.
Pops was hiding under the tent.Last week we went over for dinner. Pops and Sam used Pops' "new" grill. It was the first time it was used but we gave it to him almost 2 years ago. We had steaks from Omaha Steaks that we gave Pops for Christmas. He requests only consumable gifts.
It was a perfect evening to eat outside. The weather was warm but the mosquitoes have not arrived yet.

Be flexible

As I was going through this weeks pictures, I laughed at how I somehow took a picture of both Katherine and Caroline in the same pose. Kids sure are flexible. It hurts just looking at them.

Grandparents day

Katherine's school hosted a grandparents breakfast. Nana joined Katherine for donuts and fruit. I felt really sorry for the teachers after the sugar overload.
Of course Caroline joined us as well. The girls wore another cute matching outfit.
This is Katherine's best friend at school, Cole. She actually took the picture with my nice camera. She is getting to be a better photographer but still does not always center the picture correctly.

mini-Picasso

Katherine really enjoys art projects. We really need to spend more time doing them.Monday night we went to Daddy's office for dinner because he had to work late. They have a huge dry erase board leaning against the wall so after dinner we let Katherine draw.
We started off where Daddy would draw something and she would copy it. They did this step by step and ended up drawing a person. You can see in the photo above Katherine's person is on the left next to daddy's. She decided she liked drawing people and turned mommy's sun into a person.
Then on her own she drew a snowman.
The next morning Katherine wanted to draw a picture for Sophia since we are going to see her soon. I told her to draw a picture of Katherine and Sophia at Disneyland. I left the room and when I came back, this is what I saw.
I could not believe that her picture was so recognizable. This was the first time she had really drawn anything that you can tell what it is without me directing her step by step. On the left you have Aunt Jaime, The scribbles on her head are her long hair. She has a big round belly because she has a baby in her tummy. You can even see 2 dots that are the baby's eyes. Sophia is the middle head with 2 sticks that are her legs. Uncle Will is the big one who has a mad look. He has 2 long lines with dots in between them. I asked what they were and she said those are Uncle Will's bones. We read a book last night that showed all of the bones. The small lines that are coming out of everyone's necks are arms.

She's mobile

She is not fast but she is mobile. Crawling has come slowly. It has seemed that she was on the verge for a few weeks. It is funny how kids are so different. Katherine learned to crawl by pushing up when she was on her tummy. Caroline hated tummy time so she would roll over as soon as she was on her tummy. Sure enough, she learned to crawl by getting on all fours from the sitting position. She still does not spend much time on her tummy. She has been moving in about a 3 foot circle all week. She moves from sitting to all fours to sitting again. Yesterday though she really started to move in a true crawl. It is still very slow but in a matter of a few minutes she moved from the middle of the den into the kitchen.
And true to baby form, one f the first things she crawled to Hooligan's bone and then Hooligan's food. I don't know what it is about the dog food but all babies migrate toward it.
The bowl was tipped over for the first but certainly not for the last time. Our dog will not eat her food outside or in her room (the laundry room) so either Caroline will have to learn not to touch it or Hooligan will have to eat when Caroline is not around.
Caroline also learned to pull up today. She has been pulling up to her knees for about 2 weeks. The past 2 nights she has pulled to her feet in her crib. Today she pulled up out of her crib for the first time.
She promptly let go of one hand. I expected her to do a face plant but she set herself down very gently.
Then she crawled under the kitchen chairs. She was stuck but luckily did not realize it before I rescued her.
This is a fun but challenging stage, learning to be mobile. There are lots of boo-boos and boundaries have to be defined. It will make things a little more crazy around here but with every skill that Caroline acquires, it makes it more fun for Katherine to play with her

Weekend getaway

Two weeks ago we went on a little getaway to meet friends of ours. They live about 9-10 hours away by car but luckily their grandparents have a lake house about half way.

Regina and I met through my brother. She knew him when he lived in Oklahoma and then she moved to my city when we were all single. We are 2 peas in a pod. She got married one month after us and then moved away as her husband is in the Air Force. I guess we have seen each other about once a year every since. Every time we get together I wish we lived in the same town again. Now we both have 2 kids. Katherine and Elizabeth are a month apart. Caroline and Zachary are 2 months apart. We are so like minded in so many ways and we have so much fun. Traveling with kids is not easy and we both agreed that this was a trip that was worth the effort. We were able to hang out at the house, let the kids play and have lots of good talks. Caroline and Zachary did a lot of sitting around, stealing pacis and playing with toys. Both are good at sitting and rolling. Neither were crawling yet.
Bath time is always more fun with a buddy.
Katherine and Elizabeth had a lot of fun too. Don't you love Elizabeth's Thomas the Train jammies and slippers? The girls enjoyed watching TV, especially if it involved mommy snuggles. We played a Leap Frog phonics Bingo. I love their "3" shirts. Both girls are now proud 3 year olds.
Of course 3 year old girls have to dress up as princesses.
And play in the curtains. We wanted to get a cute mother daughter pictures but you can see that Elizabeth made a silly face and Katherine did not want to be in the picture at all.

Family photos

We had our family photos taken last week. We have not seen all of them but the sneak peek is up on our photographer's blog. Go check it out.

Bluebonnets

Last year I was too late in attempting bluebonnet pictures. This year I want to make sure I don't miss out. I have seen some on the side of the highway in town - not too safe. Any locals have a good spot they want to suggest?

Sleep training

Caroline has fallen into a few really bad sleep habits and we are in need of some sleep training. I HATE THIS! I typically am not one that likes to let my kids cry it out. Add to that the fact that Caroline is probably our last kid and she just loves to snuggle and you get a spoiled baby who stopped sleeping through the night. Really, I think she wakes up and just wants to snuggle. I go in and pop in the paci, rub her back, etc and she screams. The moment I pick her up she is calm and happy. In fact, she is usually bright eyed and ready to play. She has no desire to nurse so it is not that she is hungry. Sam or I will rock her to sleep (remember, we love the snuggles) and as soon as we set her in the crib, she starts to scream again. We hate to make her cry it out because we are softies, we hate crying and most importantly, we don't want to wake up Katherine.

So, what has our solution been? We have been bringing her to our bed to snuggle and sleep. I am neither here nor there are far as co-sleeping. I never set out to do it but I am not opposed to it either on occasion. I find that most people who co-sleep do so for the purpose of nursing and like I said, Caroline does not really nurse when she is sleeping with us, she is just snuggling.

But, we have decided that this must come to an end. We only have a queen size bed and by the time you slap on our bed rail it is probably more like a double. Caroline is getting bigger and well, it is just crowded. So last night Nana and Pops had Katherine for a sleep over so we could let Caroline cry without waking Katherine up. It was not a fun night. She slept until about 2:30 and then woke up and would not go back to sleep. We would watch her on the baby monitor and only go in after she had stood up and was stuck (new skill she learned last night). She woke up 3-4 times and cried for at least 30-60 minutes each time. Finally at 6:45 I did let her sleep with us. Both kids usually end up in our bed for early morning snuggles. This time Caroline slept until 9:45. So did I. That part was wonderful.

So, tonight is night 2 of trying to get her to put her self back to sleep in her own crib. Katherine is sleeping a mere 10 feet away so who knows how that will work out. Pray for us.

Arbo field trip

This past week was Spring Break from MDO. I have been wanting to get to know the kids and families of Katherine's classmates so I organized a "field trip" to the Arboretum. Unfortunately only 2 other families could join us but we had fun. Hopefully we will have another occasion to get to know more of the kids. Tulips are my favorite flower so I was excited that they were in full bloom. This is a great time to go to the Arboretum because the flowers are beautiful.
Katherine's best friend Cole joined us. Apparently they are joined at the hip at school. She talks about him all the time. As you can see they enjoy one another. They walk around holding hands all the time.
The Arboretum has storybook playhouses that are fun to plan on. I don't remember what story this was but it looked like a boat on the water.
Katherine was not cooperative for pictures at all. I gave up and decided to just enjoy the flowers and the company without trying to get cute photos of cute kids.
Kyle joined us as well. I am friends with his mom so I already knew his family. All three are playing on another playhouse.
I liked the one from Dr. Seuss' One Fish Two Fish.
Caroline joined us. She took a long nap and of course was a very happy baby.

Bagel snatcher

Every morning Katherine has a bagel with cream cheese for breakfast. I know it is not the healthiest meal but she can eat it independently and she will eat it. I even let her eat breakfast while watching Sesame Street if it is a day I am in a rush to get ready. The other day I was getting my breakfast ready (also a bagel with cream cheese) when I hear,

"Mom, Caroline is eating by bagel!"
"Well, Katherine, don't let her eat your bagel."
"But Mom, I think she likes it."

So, I run in to get the bagel away from Caroline. It was in her mouth and she had cream cheese all over her face and hands. I was a good mommy and took the bagel away before grabbing my camera. At least she is old enough that the ingredients of bagels and cream cheese are OK though without teeth it is a choking hazard. As you can see in the picture, Caroline did in fact like the bagel and she was trying her hardest to get more.

Cloth Diapers

We use cloth diapers when we are at home and sometimes when we are on the go. I know that sounds crazy to many of my readers but I also know that I have converted a number of people to cloth diapering as well.
My reasons for cloth diapering are varied but it was mainly cost and the fact that they are more healthy. Saving the landfills from my diapers is a nice side benefit as well.
We used cloth diapers with Katherine as well and Caroline is using those same diapers so the savings is really adding up now. It especially adds up as I am able to sell some of the diapers we have outgrown to a friend for about half of what I paid for them new.
In the newborn phase we use a Kissiluvs fitted diaper with a Prowrap or Bummis cover. When the girls get bigger we have a larger set of those diapers as well as a lot of pocket diapers. Our favorites are Fuzzibunz and Bum Genius. Fuzzibunz are sized (S, M, L, XL) whereas the Bum Genius are a one size diaper so there are advantages of each.
A few months ago I entered a Friday Fluff contest on the Diaper Whisperer blog. Actually, I enter almost every week. But, I won! I won a large wet bag that I use in my diaper pail, a small wet bag that I use when out and about and one new diaper. It is a Blueberry diaper. The Blueberry diaper is very similar to a Bum Genius and I really like it a lot. It fits Caroline very well and has not leaked yet. It is the diaper she is modeling in these photos.
